Traditional Tamil Superfoods: What Our Grandmothers Knew

By Thinai Organics • Thinai Wellness

Thinai, saamai, kollu and nallennai: the everyday foods of Tamil kitchens, why they faded, and why families are bringing them back. A founder's story.

Traditional Tamil superfoods include thinai (foxtail millet), saamai (little millet), kollu (horse gram), kambu (pearl millet) and wood pressed nallennai (sesame oil). They are rich in fibre, protein and minerals, and Tamil grandmothers cooked with them every day.

A Kitchen in Chennai, 1987

My grandmother's kitchen had no nutritionist and no supplement jars. It had a stone grinder that ran every morning, a brass vessel of chekku sesame oil on the counter, and a tin of thinai flour that went into everything from kanji to ladoos.

I'm Saranya Rajendran, founder of Thinai Organics, and this is why I started the company: to bring back something we almost lost.

The Foods Tamil Nadu Forgot

For centuries, Tamil food was built around millets, legumes, chekku oils and fermented foods. These weren't "health foods". They were just food, suited to our climate, soil and work.

Then polished white rice displaced millets and refined oils replaced chekku oils. Food became cheaper and longer-lasting, but lost much of its fibre and nutrients. Today that older wisdom is coming back.

The Core Traditional Tamil Superfoods

Thinai (Foxtail Millet)

Thinai appears in Sangam poetry as the grain of the Mullai landscape. Per 100 g it gives about 12 g protein, 8 g fibre and 2.8 mg iron, more protein and fibre than polished white rice. Its lower glycaemic index is why many people watching their blood sugar choose it. Read more: thinai in English and its benefits.

Saamai (Little Millet)

Saamai grows in poor soils with little water, and saamai kanji was a traditional breakfast across Madurai, Tirunelveli and the Kongu region. It is light, cooks quickly and gives B vitamins and minerals.

Kollu (Horse Gram)

Kollu is one of the most protein-rich pulses (around 22 g per 100 g). Kollu rasam is a much-loved Tamil home remedy for cold weather and colds.

Nallennai (Wood Pressed Sesame Oil)

Nallennai literally means "the good oil". Sesame oil has been the base of Tamil cooking and Siddha tradition for over 2,000 years. Unrefined sesame oil naturally contains the antioxidants sesamol and sesamin, along with vitamin E.

Why We Started Thinai Organics

When I became a mother, I started asking the question my grandmother never had to ask: what am I actually feeding my family?

Most "traditional" foods in Chennai supermarkets weren't: polished thinai with the bran stripped off, solvent-extracted oils, "millet" products that were mostly refined flour. The real things, unpolished and chekku-pressed, were hard to find unless you knew a farmer.

That gap is why Thinai Organics exists. We bring unpolished millets, wood pressed oils and traditional Tamil foods to your doorstep, packed in Chennai.

How to Bring Them Back Into Your Routine

  1. Replace white rice with thinai once a week; start with thinai kanji or pongal.
  2. Switch to wood pressed sesame oil for tempering and rice dishes.
  3. Add saamai noodles to the weekly menu.
  4. Make kollu rasam on Sundays.
  5. Try millet ladoos instead of packaged sweets for children.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are traditional Tamil millets suitable for people with diabetes?

Thinai and saamai have a lower glycaemic index than polished white rice, which is why many people with diabetes use them as rice swaps. Always ask your doctor for advice that fits you.

Where can I buy traditional Tamil foods online?

Thinai Organics stocks unpolished thinai and saamai, wood pressed sesame oil and other traditional foods, delivered across India from thinaiorganics.com.

What is the difference between stone-milled and regular millet flour?

Stone mills grind at lower temperatures and keep the bran, giving a coarser, more flavourful flour.
